Accessible Gardens

Time spent outdoors, the calm, the routine, and the gentle stimulation that comes from fresh air, greenery and natural light, is so valuable. Which is why accessible gardens are open to everyone, offering a safe and peaceful space to relax, socialise or take part in outdoor activities. Whether it’s a quiet morning with a cup of tea or a group gardening session, our outdoor areas are here to be enjoyed, every day.

Designed for Everyone

Our gardens are fully accessible, with level paths and clear layouts to support individuals who use mobility aids or wheelchairs. Residents are welcome to use the space as they wish, going for a short walk, joining a gardening group, or simply enjoying a sunny afternoon with visiting family. Raised planters, seating areas and sensory-friendly features help make the space practical and engaging for all abilities.

Outdoor activities are a regular part of life at Gilmerton, with walking groups, gardening clubs and seasonal events taking place throughout the year. Our team is always happy to support residents who may need help getting outside, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of nature in a way that feels safe and comfortable.

Wellbeing Through Nature

Spending time outdoors can lift the mood, ease anxiety and support better sleep and appetite, especially for people living with neurological conditions. Whether it’s listening to birdsong, feeling the sun on your face, or joining a small group in the garden, these moments help bring a gentle rhythm and a sense of connection to the day.

We see the garden as an extension of our home, and we encourage residents to make use of it however suits them best. From quiet one-to-one time with carers to sociable community projects like planting flowers or growing herbs, the garden provides a valuable space for relaxation, reflection and enjoyment.
