Rehabilitation Care

We provide slow stream rehabilitation for individuals living with acquired brain injuries and complex neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neurone Disease, stroke, and epilepsy. Our focus is always on helping people rediscover a sense of purpose, regain confidence, and reach their personal potential.

We understand that progress can take time, especially after life-changing injuries or diagnoses. That’s why our care is carefully paced and thoughtfully structured, built around realistic, meaningful goals set with each individual. Whether someone is at the beginning of their recovery or continuing rehabilitation after hospital discharge, our dedicated team provides the support and encouragement needed every step of the way.

Understanding Rehabilitation Care

Rehabilitation care supports individuals to regain or maintain functionality and independence following injury or illness affecting the brain and nervous system. This includes everything from improving mobility and speech to developing new ways to manage cognitive changes or emotional wellbeing. For many people, recovery doesn’t follow a set timeline – so having time, space and specialist input makes a real difference.

Our approach at Gilmerton is rooted in partnership. Residents, families, and clinical teams work together to identify what matters most to the individual. We then create a personalised rehabilitation plan that includes practical therapy sessions, everyday skill-building, and support with emotional and social wellbeing. Progress is reviewed regularly and care plans are adapted as needs evolve. Every small step is a step forward, and we’re here to celebrate them all.

Rehabilitation Care at Gilmerton

Our in-house rehabilitation team includes experienced physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and therapy assistants, supported by NHS Lothian neuro-rehabilitation services and visiting consultants. Therapy sessions are delivered across the week and are tailored to individual needs, combining structured interventions with real-life, meaningful activities. From functional skill-building to cognitive therapy games and hydrotherapy, our sessions are as varied as the people we support.

We also work closely with wider services including Headway, the Anne Rowling MS Rehabilitation Centre, and other specialist partners. As Scotland’s only Headway Accredited Provider, we are recognised for our specialist care for acquired brain injuries. At Gilmerton, rehabilitation is embedded into daily life – from the support of our nursing team to our community activities and accessible spaces. We believe that everyone deserves the chance to live with purpose, on their own terms.

Slow stream rehabilitation provides longer-term, low-intensity support for individuals whose recovery is ongoing but may be gradual. It’s particularly suited to people with complex neurological needs, helping them work towards meaningful goals at a pace that suits their individual journey.

We support individuals with a range of neurological conditions, including brain injury, Parkinson’s, MS, MND, stroke, and epilepsy. Whether someone is recently discharged from hospital or has been managing a condition for some time, we offer tailored rehabilitation to support their next steps.

Goals are set in partnership with each resident, their family, and our multi-disciplinary team. We take a “what matters to you” approach, ensuring that therapy plans reflect personal aspirations – from physical improvements to social connection or emotional wellbeing.
