Palliative Care

Our compassionate palliative care focuses on comfort, dignity, and quality of life. We understand that this stage of care can be emotionally complex for both residents and their families. That’s why our team is here to provide consistent support, sensitive communication and person-centred care at every step.

We believe that palliative care should be tailored to each individual’s wishes, values, and needs. Whether someone is living with a life-limiting neurological condition or receiving end-of-life care, we make sure they feel heard, respected and safe. Families are welcomed into the process and supported as much as needed, with a clear focus on ensuring no one feels alone during this important time.

Understanding Palliative Care

We care for residents with complex neurological conditions such as Motor Neurone Disease, advanced Parkinson’s, and Multiple Sclerosis, offering physical, emotional and psychological support for both the individual and their loved ones.

We use anticipatory care planning to ensure each resident’s preferences are clearly understood and respected. This means thinking ahead together – discussing the type of care someone wishes to receive, where they want to be, and how they want to be supported. It’s a collaborative process that brings peace of mind and helps ensure dignity is maintained throughout.

Palliative Care at Gilmerton NCC

Gilmerton is proud to be part of the 7 Steps to Anticipatory Care Planning (ACP) programme, a long-term partnership with Edinburgh Health and Social Care. This ensures our team is trained to deliver high-quality palliative care that’s personalised and well-coordinated. We’re also supported by Marie Curie services, giving residents access to specialist end-of-life support when it’s most needed.

Our nursing team provides 24-hour care, and every staff member works to create a calm and comfortable environment for residents and their families. Quiet communal areas, private rooms and open visiting policies help ensure that loved ones can spend time together in a way that feels natural and unhurried. Whether someone is staying for a short time or receiving long-term palliative support, our focus remains the same: compassion, dignity and comfort.
