Functional Therapy

Functional therapy plays a key role in helping residents regain confidence and improve their independence. We understand that the impact of neurological conditions and brain injuries reaches far beyond physical health – it affects how people think, communicate, plan and carry out everyday tasks. That’s why our therapy approach is focused not only on physical recovery, but on enabling individuals to reconnect with the skills and routines that shape daily life.

Whether someone is working towards a return to assisted work, looking to rebuild basic life skills, or simply hoping to feel more in control of their day-to-day activities, our functional therapy team is here to support them every step of the way. We take the time to understand each person’s goals and tailor therapy sessions that are meaningful, practical and achievable.

Understanding Functional Therapy

Functional therapy brings together a range of disciplines to support individuals in managing the challenges that often follow brain injury or neurological illness. This can include improving memory and cognitive processing, strengthening motor skills, building routines for personal care, and developing techniques to manage long-term changes in ability. Every session is focused on helping people do more for themselves safely, confidently, and at their own pace.

The approach is holistic, recognising that wellbeing is shaped by many things – not just physical ability, but emotional resilience, motivation and a sense of purpose. By combining therapeutic input with enjoyable activities and real-life tasks, we aim to keep therapy engaging and relevant to each individual. Whether it’s preparing a meal, joining a group activity or completing a personal task, the goal is always the same: to help people feel more capable in their everyday lives.

Our therapy team includes physiotherapists, occupational therapists and therapy assistants, who work together with residents to assess needs and build tailored intervention plans. We also collaborate with speech and language therapists, psychologists, and other clinical specialists to support all areas of functional ability, from communication and problem-solving to managing fatigue and maintaining motivation.

Therapy sessions at Gilmerton are practical, varied and adapted to suit each individual. They may include cognitive games, group exercises, sensory activities or supported outings, all with a focus on helping residents build confidence and independence in meaningful ways. We also work with external organisations, such as Headway and the Edinburgh Volunteer Centre, offering opportunities for residents to get involved in supported volunteering and community-based experiences.
